What's coming after Spring Break?

Hi 4S,
Can you believe it's Spring Break already?  The year has really flown by and what a wonderful year it has been! Now, all we need is the warm weather!

As 3rd quarter is coming to a close, here is what we are learning about after Spring Break:

Reading:  No switch for about two weeks.  We will be focusing on non-fiction text structures such as main idea/details, compare/contrast, cause/effect, sequencing, and problem/solution.  Mid April, we will do our final switch for reading with the intention of focusing on building rich vocabulary and incorporating this with the writing process.  We will continue to also concentrate on literal and inferential questioning as well.  After the switch (about 4 weeks) we will get into Reader's Theater, which is one of my favorite units of the year.  So fun, and the children really love it!

Math:  We will start our fractions unit.

Social Studies:  In April, we will begin our last research project covering the West and Southwest Regions of the United States.  Students will work on the research project individually (no groups) and will put together a power point presentation where they will be recording their speeches.  Some of the topics of research include climate/natural disasters, manufacturing, plants, animals, culture and landforms.

Writing: The students will review persuasive writing and start a persuasive paper.  Later, we will be writing narratives and finally, poetry at the end of the year.  The students are also practicing their cursive letters.

Science:  We will continue our study ecosystems, and next up we have a unit which focuses on Illinois birds.  This project incorporates narrative writing, poetry, expository writing, computer work, and of course, research.  This unit also prepares them for the upcoming unit on wetlands.  They might even see their bird at the Lincoln Marsh field trip (May 15).

**Thank you for your continued practice with multiplication and division facts (0-12) at home.  Children who know their facts fluently have a much easier time with our math units in the fourth quarter!  We are continuing with xtramath and “mad minutes.”

Upcoming Events:

4/3:  McDonald’s Night for PTA (Mr. Callahan will be working the counter from 4:30-6:00)
4/10:  Report cards coming home
4/5:  Smile Dental Clinic
4/8:  Book Fair Week
4/13:  PTA Tag Sale
4/15:  Roller Skating Week
4/30:  Volunteer Luncheon
5/15:  Lincoln Marsh Field Trip (more information to come)
5/24:  Explore More Day
5/27:  Memorial Day (No School)

Have a relaxing and safe Spring Break!
