Valentine’s Day and Digestion…

Those two don’t really sound good together, do they? But it’s what’s happening in 4S!

The kids will be making Valentine’s Day boxes before Valentine’s Day to put their cards in. Please send your child to school with a shoe box if you can by 2/11. If you have extra shoe boxes to donate, that would be appreciated! You can send the boxes in at any point; I will store them in the classroom.

In science, we have been learning about the buman body to prepare for our biggest project of the year starting next week! Each child is assigned a particular body part they are responsible for researching. In addition to their individual part, they are working together in their overall body system their part is in. For example, "I have the part of the small intestine, and I’m in the Digestive System." The project covers all four report card standards for language arts and involves many important skills from researching, reading, taking notes, citing sources, to giving an oral speech and creating a power point presentation. As I wrote earlier, this is the biggest project of 4th grade, and the children always deem it as one of their favorite 4th grade moments.

Coming up, we have the exciting opportunity to correlate both our social studies and reading curriculums. We will begin learning about the Southeast Region of the United States along with the Civil War and Harriet Tubman/Underground Railroad  during the month of February. We read novels about Harriet Tubman during our reading switch and have an awesome Underground Railroad activity at the end. This activity also includes our PACE reading students and is another favorite activity of fourth grade. In conjunction with our studies, for the very first time this year, we will attend a play at COD about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad on February 23. Thank you again for sending in your permission slips and money! We are anticipating a great day!

In language arts and writing, we are comparing texts, (both non-fiction and fiction), writing narrative, opinion/argument, and expository responses to the texts. Currently, we are reading a realistic fiction article about the Dust Bowl and sequencing the important events to write a narrative journal entry from the view point of the main character. With this same article, we will also be writing an opinion/argument paper with the help of a graphic organizer.

Coming next week in math is measurement. Our goal is to spend two weeks covering Customary Units of measure before moving on to Metric Units of measure. They will need to covert within systems with the aid of a conversion chart. As always, math flex groups will be based on pre-test scores.
